Our first guest, Herkko Hietanen!

Filed under: Our Guests — Radio Free Finland @ 6:07 pm

He’s a lawyer who specializes in IT-law particularly with open source, a PhD student, co-founder of EFFI (Electronic Frontier Finland), actively involved with Creative Commons since it’s beginning in 2001, writer of the popular “CopyFraud” blog, and was recently threatened with an 80,000 euro lawsuit from a fancy Helsinki restaurant just because he a wrote complaint letter to them and posted it online as well - he’s (drumroll please)……..Herkko Hietanen!!

We’ll be discussing filesharing, piracy, copyright, open source software, EFFI, creative commons, and of course, Lehtovaara resataurant. Many thanks to Herkko for being so brave as to be the first guest on the show!!

Read more about him from his blog or his official website.

Tune in this Sunday night at 10pm (Finnish Time - 3pm EST) for the live interview, send in your questions to be read on the air, or if you have a microphone and Skype, you can chat live with our guest.

Welcome!!

Filed under: FAQ — Radio Free Finland @ 6:50 pm

Welcome to the new site of the new online radio show, “Radio Free Finland” premiering this Sunday night at 22.00 EEST. Anyone with an internet connection will be able to listen live, and you can even call-in live with your normal phone, or contact us via “Skype“. Or just e-mail us your questions and comments and we’ll read them “on the air”.

This radio show is a bit of an experiment. Most podcasts are just pre-recordings of some guy talking to himself for an hour. We’re incorporating some other applications and technologies so we can do it live with guests and callers. So - it could be a complete disaster when nothing works, or it might just turn out OK. Either way, we’re gonna have a lot of fun doing it no matter what. And that’s the main goal with this: fun.

Radio Free Finland will be like a variety show - kinda like a mix between The Diane Rehm Show, NPR’s Fresh Air, The Daily Show, and Conan O’Brien. Each week we’ll have different guests to talk about various topics, not always just politics, but I promise to often make it something quite controversal. I’m hoping both native Finns and foreigners in Finland will listen and participate, so expect regular discussions relating to immigrants in Finland. And of course we’ll have the normal news, current events, culture, politics in Finland and the U.S., just like on Finland for Thought.

If you have any ideas for guests or you’d like to be a guest on the show yourself, please e-mail us!! Also, any comments, suggestions, questions, advice, criticism…is very much welcomed! Check out our FAQ pages for more info.

And again, this show is all about having fun!! I really hope everyone participates, calls-in (even if it’s just a quick “hello!” or “fuck you!”) and enjoys themselves. :-)

…This Sunday’s guests will be announced tomorrow.

Practice makes perfect

Woof!
Phil practices for the show by interviewing his dog, Oggie. Phil tries to get Oggie to answer some difficult questions, but the dog just won’t budge!

What is Radio Free Finland?

Filed under: FAQ — Radio Free Finland @ 5:15 pm

Radio Free Finland is an English-language online radio show (or otherwise known as a “podcast“) hosted by Phil from Finland for Thought. Check out our previous shows.

Topics include: Current events, politics, culture, foreigners in Finland, the United States - and anything else that might be interesting. Each week we’ll have different guests to share their expertise with us. This program is a variety show, each week we’ll discuss different issues, don’t expect the same ol’ political slop each week.

This show *ISN’T* a U.S. Republican style “hard talk” show such as Bill O’Reilly or Rush Limbaugh. It’s meant to be a mature discussion about the issues, although don’t be surprised if the host takes the maturity level down a notch or two. Enjoy!

What file format is the show using?

Filed under: FAQ — Radio Free Finland @ 4:14 pm

How can I get regular updates about the show?

Filed under: FAQ — Radio Free Finland @ 3:49 pm

Visit this site regularly. If you don’t want to visit the blog often, download an application such as “RSS Owl” that will download blog feeds to your computer automatically. Once you have one of these applications, add this feed (feed:http://www.radiofreefinland.net/?feed=rss2) to your program.

How can I get my computer to automatically download each new show?

Filed under: FAQ — Radio Free Finland @ 3:42 pm

If you don’t want to visit the show each week and download the shows manually, have your computer do it automatically for you each week! Download the free application called “iPodder” - each time a new show is released, iPodder will automatically download it to your hard drive. Or for even better option, download iTunes.

Once you’ve installed iPodder or iTunes, click on this link (http://www.radiofreefinland.net/audiofeed/rss.xml) and iPodder will know to download this show each week.
