Tomorrow night at 10pm - Mikko Jokipii AKA “Maaco” was just on the Conan O’Brien show this past week where Conan did a skit about Tarja Halonen. He’ll be chatting with us live from New York about his experience on the show.
Also we’ll talk with Sofi Bergheim, she’s a Swedish-Finn and we’ll be discussing the Swedish-Finnish community.
Boy was she wrong about swedish-speaking finns. She should really try to go outside kehä III sometime…

Happened to find the ’show’ when looking for podcasts. It may be fun to make a radio talk show for fun, but I’m sorry, there was not much of a content. I don’t know whom are these recordings made for, but maybe they are educative or entertaining for Americans so who am I to say…
I had no idea that it is important if a Finnish person has bought a ticket to an American tv talk show studio recording, but who am I to say…
The part of Swedish in Finland actually might be educative for foreigners who have not been to Finland or have not had a chance to talk to any Finn.
Only that also there was the Hosts knowledge that there are no people who would have learned basic skills in Finnish in a reasonable time. Not true. I always remember Hugues from the 80s who had come from France and we were sitting around a table with visitors from Germany and as in the middle of the conversation in English Hugues said something in Finnish the Germans were startled and asked ‘You know Finnish! Isn’t it very difficult? How long did it take for you to be able to use it fluently?’ ‘No’, said Hugues, ‘it took three months and of course I still make mistakes, but it doesn’t matter’. And it really didn’t matter.
Looking for the podcasts I also thought that I found something interesting: ‘How to Really Learn Spanish’ but no, it was stressing on the Spanish pronounciation which may be difficult for the ENGLISH speaking people with little knowledge of other languages. (You know like [tengo] and not [tengou] - well [sofi] and not [soufi]
I guess you already know this worn out wisdom of how do ou call a person who knows two languages? Right, bilingual. What is then a person who knows only one language? Yes, an American.

Well the show is just for fun, and I know the guests enjoy doing it and there’s hundreds of people each week download the podcast and quite a few people listening to the live broadcast. Sorry you didn’t enjoy it.
Maybe you could come on the show as a guest and tell us what a douchebag you are? That would be an interesting show. You could spout off more silly anti-American comments, and maybe you have some racist jokes you’d like to share with us too? That would be cool.

The interview with the finland-swede was frankly embarrasing. As a finland-swede, I found she spoke utter stereotypical rubbish most of the time and just upheld all the silly and untrue stereotypes held by SOME Finnish speakers about Swedish speakers in Finland.
Swedish-speaking Finns are not insular at all, and most have lots of Finnish friends, and also even family members through inter-marriage between the language communities. It’s also rubbish to say that they are all rich and driving around in BMWs. Many are not so well off farmers or just on the same level as the other speakers, just go to Swedish speaking areas to the east and west of Helsingfors/Helsinki or to Österbotten.
