Good show. Interesting to see if Conan really comes over here and does something. There will probably be other fans than just you and your girlfriend hunting him down if he does…
Enjoyed that whole Swedish-Finn part of the show as well. Let’s just hope that people have a good enough sense of humour so that they don’t take all those funny stereotypes too seriously. After all, even though the Swedish-speaking working class has almost vanished from Helsinki, there still are rural communities even in Uusimaa where people who speak Swedish don’t drive BMW’s or shop at Stockmann’s.
Just one point regarding that whole Swedish Peoples Party issue: I think that they are always in the government simply because they seem to be ready to accept almost anything as long as they get a seat or a few at the big table. This also makes them an easy partner for almost any coalition, as they as a small party can’t ask for much either. Maybe this automatic government thing also has a lot to do with the all-over profile of the party, or really the lack of a clear one. If you don’t take the language into the count, the party seems to try to do something to everybody and thus ends up looking quite toothless and uninteresting even to many Swedish-Finns.
I have to say that Sofi’s views on making Swedish voluntary perhaps aren’t all that unusual after all, as most of the Swedish-Finns I know seem to agree on this at least to a certain degree. It’s just as Sofi pointed out: it might reduce the hostility against Swedish-speakers in general.
That said I also understand that many don’t want to in a way “give up” on this issue as it might look like those really annoying people who are always attacking anything with the word Swedish in it would have won. After all, as you Phil pointed out, this subject always seems to turn up the heat in Finland.
Finally a non-related technical thingy: why does that commenting button say “Lähetä kysely”? Or is it just because people now can ask why it’s there?

I’m sure that there are a few of those stereotypes she talked about in Helsinki. As there are finnish speaking people who fit that form perfectly as well. And there are poor people of both groups as well etc. etc. From what I’ve heard anyway. I wouldn’t know as I haven’t been there many times in my life.
If someone took those stereotypes seriosly, a trip outside Helsinki would be something to consider.
There are lots of swedish speaking counties on the west coast all the way up to Kokkola. And I know that it is impossible to see any difference what so ever. By their looks or from what they drive.
Joonas is absolutely right about SFP. It is also my opinion that they are there because they often turn their coats depending on from where the wind comes. But we most also remember that they have a loyal group that almost always vote for them. They get pretty much the same amount of votes every time, no matter what the election is about.

Yeah, this way of trying to avoid taking a clear stand seems to work out well in Finnish politics - just look at Halonen’s (or Vanhanen’s) approval ratings.
