Matti Hautsalo is working as an advocacy officer at Kepa, The Service Centre for Development Cooperation (www.kepa.fi). Matti lobbies Finnish politicians and government officials about trade issues on behalf of the least developed countries. Through Kepa he represents its over 250 members, which are all Finnish NGOs (non-governmental organisations) dealing with development issues. He will be a member of the Finnish delegation in the WTO 6th ministerial meeting taking place in Hong Kong, December 13-18.
Matti’sacademic background is in economics and development studies.
Prior to joining Kepa he worked 8 years in investment banking and management consulting.

Kepa advocates fair trade instead of free trade. That sounds good but “fair trade” is a socialist idea and far from being fair. Free trade is fair.

Not all free trade is fair. We need rules that take into account that some countries are on the level where they cannot benefit from free trade. Other things need to be shaped up first, there. Kepa is not against free trade, but proper rule sare always needed.
As for funding, there is an outstanding amount of organisations from all fields of political views which get either direct or indirect tax payer funding. That, for sure, is Finland.

Matti, I know what you think about it but you should read proper economics more. Free trade is good for all.

I would like to ask two questions.
Firstly, do you think that there a growing tendency for centre-left governments to see agricultural subsidies from helping rural workers to being harmful to the poor with high food prices? As was demonstration in New Zealand when the Labour Party cut subsidies to the bone and opened up food markets, plus the recent calling by Minna Lintonen to abolish subsidies.
Secondly, do you think the development of a fairtrade coffee by Nescafé and AMT coffee kiosks to stock only fairtrade coffee, just a marketing ploy or a major change in food companies policies?

It’s a misunderstanding to suggest that the theory comparative advantage would predict that the free trade benefits all. This game:

proves, on the other hand, that under certain circumstances it, indeed, is beneficial, but you wouldn’t have to change the parameters much towards the real life situations and as a result one or the other player would end up worse off because of the free trade. This should be self evident, unless something prevents free thinking. Furthermore, in the real world there are hundreds of millions of people whose work has not enough value so that somebody would want to buy it. These people fall completely outside the scope of the theory.
